Vienna, Austria — A beloved Filipino pastime is taking center stage this spring as RAMBAK and the Philippine-Austrian Society team up to host “Let’s Play Sungka — or is it Mancala?”, an evening dedicated to culture, community, and friendly competition.
The event will take place on April 18, 2026, from 17:30 to 20:00 at gretl Margareten, Einsiedlerplatz 7, 1050 Wien. Admission is free, with voluntary donations warmly welcomed.
Sungka, a traditional Filipino board game played with shells or stones, is part of the broader global family of mancala-style games. While many cultures share similar gameplay, Sungka carries its own rhythm, strategy, and cultural significance — something participants will get to explore firsthand.
A highlight of the evening will be a short lecture by Prof. Johann Stockinger, who will guide attendees through the history, rules, and cultural roots of Sungka. Following the talk, guests will have the chance to try the game themselves, whether they’re seasoned players or complete beginners.
Organizers say the event aims to bring people together across cultures, spark curiosity, and celebrate the simple joy of play. With its mix of learning and hands-on fun, the night promises to be both welcoming and enriching — a small but meaningful bridge between Filipino heritage and Vienna’s multicultural community.
